"What's New for April?"

That was a question posted on Liberia Stories earlier this month.

Well, what's new for April is actually old. After a full year of searching for the perfect words (and not finding them), I have decided to just go ahead and post some of the pictures I took last April at the 25th Anniversary Memorial Celebration for the 13 government officials killed on April 22, 1980, shortly after the coup d'etat. They are posted along with the draft I wrote back then.

I think another reason it has taken me so long to share what I have is that no images can adequately convey the sheer power of that day.

I have posted each picture separately (in the April 2005 folder) so that relatives and friends can add comments and personal memories. I, too, will post the perfect words as they come to me.

Thank-you for your blog.

In Indianapolis Indiana there are many immigrants from Western Africa, from Senegal through Cameroon.

There is a lady from Liberia who has a grocery store not far from where I live. Her husband is from Ghana.

Hi Elma,
Just stopped in to check out your blog and behold you are sharing pictures of the "13" men killed on April 22nd, 1980. Seeing the picture of my grandfather brought back memories... fond ones that I will always treasure. For sure "WE WILL REMEMBER THEM".

Thanks again for sharing - you do an awesome job!

Thanks Marjorie. You were on my mind that day every time I looked at him. It would be great if you could go back to his picture and share one of those fond memories with us in the comment area!

Okay Elma here's one fond memory.. I'm either 7 or 8 yrs old - A friend and I decide to make some bucks for Xmas by dressing up as "Old Man Beggar". We go over to my grandfathers house and as always his house is filled with people. He hears I'm there to see him - stops what he's doing, comes out of his office only to find me beating the drum (paint cup) and singing "weah weah sanny klau weah" while my friend (whose name I will withhold)is dancing away. He had the biggest grin on his face, sat there thru the whole thing and needless to say we got a little something to buy ice cream and candy. I can still picture his face.
